My Struggle With Chronic Pain

Hi! My name is Jessica Cleveland. I am a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivor and founder of the TBI Recovery Institute.

I have suffered from chronic pain and migraines since I experienced a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) in 2017. I tried everything to stop the pain and migraine attacks, but the tools available to me (medications) only seemed to make things worse. I went on a mission to find a better way to get to the bottom of my pain, and that is when i discovered the true power of Neuroplasticity.

My life completely changed when I learned about the visualization techniques in “The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity” by Norman Doidge! The research and stories in this book showed me that I could take control of my chronic pain and migraine, and I didn’t have to live at the mercy of my pain for the rest of my life!

I have to admit that motivating myself to start implementing visualization techniques into my pain management routine was a little challenging. When my pain attacks would start, all I wanted to do was crawl into bed with an ice pack and disappear from the world. The last thing I wanted to do was use my brain to visualize! However, I was desperate, and I needed to find a way to break my pain cycles without harsh medications.

Surprisingly, I noticed a considerable improvement the first time I tried this technique. I was able to extinguish my pain for a few minutes at a time. This success was highly motivating, and I became relentless. Every time I felt the onset of my pain, I would start to visualize, and before I knew it, I could hold my pain and migraine attacks off completely. I use this technique whenever I start to experience pain, and it has completely changed my life.

I don’t know how to meditate!

Each guided visualization is between 11 and 12 minutes long. You will eventually get to the point where you can utilize this technique anywhere at any time without anyone ever knowing. Learning these techniques should not take more than 15 minutes a day.

 What is Guided Visualization?

Guided visualization is a technique that uses a series of verbal suggestions to guide someone in visualizing images in the mind that produces a positive physical response, such as a reduction in pain, anxiety, or stress.

Who could benefit from this technique?

Anyone that is experiencing chronic pain or chronic migraine. This technique will be most effective for anyone that is experiencing pain long after an injury in the body has healed, or someone that does not currently have an acute condition/stimulus causing the pain. If you are dealing with a chronic illness or injury, this technique could help to decrease your pain levels but it will likely not extinguish the pain if something is actively causing it. This information and guided visualizations are for informational purposes only. When do I use guided visualization as a tool to combat chronic pain or chronic migraine?

In order to be effective against chronic pain or migraine, visualization techniques should be started at the onset of a pain or migraine attack. Every time you feel your pain or migraine “acting up”, start visualizing.
